Bohnert butcher's shop: cohesion is also a priority in Corona times

The Bohnert butcher's shop in Oberkirch, north-east of Offenburg, was founded in 1937 by Georg and Anna Bohnert. The family business can therefore look back on over 80 years of history and experience. The Bohnert butcher's shop relocated for the second time in 1969, moving into the new building that was then the current store. Under the management of Jochen Bohnert, who took over his parents' business in 2006 and led it into the third generation, the butcher's shop was completely modernized in 2017.

In addition to his training as a master butcher, Jochen Bohnert completed further training as a meat sommelier and is a co-founder of the "Metzger des Vertrauens" (trusted butchers) value group - an association of meat-processing family businesses that are committed to raising awareness of regional quality products. High quality standards and an awareness of sustainability and responsibility are therefore a matter of course for Jochen Bohnert and become the daily motivation for his work.

At the beginning of the coronavirus pandemic, the business was like many other butchers' shops: sales from the party and delivery service for large events were lost. It also quickly became clear that the otherwise fixed income components from the wine festivals typical of the region would be lost. On the one hand, this was compensated for by the well-organized delivery service, which has been offered on a smaller scale away from major events since the beginning of the corona-related restrictions. Orders received by 11:00 a.m. are still delivered on the same day and handed over contactlessly. Customers can then conveniently transfer the invoice amount. A small delivery fee of 3 euros would only be charged if the value of the order is less than 30 euros - a case that has not occurred once to date. On the other hand, higher sales can be recorded in the store. In particular, the in-house canned products with sauerbraten, goulash, chili sin carne and the usual sausages are very popular. The increased demand is also the reason why all the tables in the store, which were previously used for lunch, were moved and converted into additional counters. This meant that the necessary distancing measures could be maintained without any problems.

Thanks to family cohesion and great mutual support, the business was also able to implement the other necessary protective measures quickly. The Plexiglas protective wall in the Bohnert butcher's store was in place long before other businesses were able to install it - made possible by a carpenter within the immediate family circle.

But it wasn't just the family that stuck together and showed solidarity - Jochen Bohnert was also committed to our truffle hunting community: in addition to a truffle and Parmesan salami, the master butcher and sommelier offers a total of eight types of salami from Brandt & Levie in the Netherlands, making him the only butcher in Baden-Württemberg to stock these high-quality delicatessen salamis from organically reared pigs. In our truffle hunter community, exchange, mutual support and solidarity are paramount, even in difficult times!
