Land.luft Bio: Awareness of sustainable products is on the rise, or: The positive sides of the crisis

Our last Corona story for the time being takes us to Leberfing in the Lower Bavarian district of Rottal-Inn to the Land.Luft Bio farm. Of course, it is almost always the case that the success of a business does not depend on a single person, but always on the interaction of the entire team, but in the case of Land.Luft, the team spirit is particularly noteworthy. With a great deal of joint effort, Land.Luft has managed to overcome the numerous bureaucratic hurdles and obtain EU approval for a mobile slaughter trailer for the pasture slaughter of pigs, cattle and sheep. Land.Luft is thus treading a completely new path.

Although the formerly fallow farm was only taken into operation by Land.Luft Bio in 2016, the farming and butchery business is now clearly one of the pioneers in terms of animal welfare and organic quality. All animals are born on the pastures and live outdoors all year round, whether grazing pigs, grazing cattle or mountain sheep. When the animals are ready for slaughter, they are slaughtered directly on their familiar pasture in the presence of the people they know. Transport routes and any other kind of stress are completely avoided. As the name suggests, part of the actual slaughter - namely the killing and bleeding - takes place on the pasture, while the cutting and processing takes place in the farm's own butchery. On slaughter day itself, only those animals are slaughtered that visit the feed in the mobile slaughter trailer, to which they have already been accustomed for several days.

This is not only a particularly gentle method for the livestock: as a study by the Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich (LMU) in Munich shows, the absolutely stress-free slaughter process for the animal has a highly positive effect on the quality and taste of the meat. Traditional hot meat processing, without the use of additives for sausage processing, is also made possible directly on the farm.

The coronavirus crisis has brought noticeable changes for Land.Luft - both positive and negative. For example, the organic restaurant and the restaurants that otherwise offer Land.Luft products had to close completely for a time. This made it much more difficult to sell the products. Selling the animals to other abattoirs was out of the question, as Land.Luft has made a commitment to its animals to refrain from any animal transportation.

However, following adjustments to the hygiene and distancing measures, at least the farm store and market cart were able to remain in operation. The organic restaurant and the associated beer garden have been open again since the end of May and the team is happy to be able to welcome guests again. It is noticeable that awareness of sustainable and high-quality goods has increased significantly.

One clear advantage during the crisis was the Land.Luft online store: the company not only delivers orders in the immediate vicinity, but also ships them throughout Germany - made possible by working with a conscientious express shipping partner and a packaging concept that guarantees the cold chain is maintained for 24 hours. Goods dispatched the day before are delivered to the customer the following morning, so that the freshness of the products is guaranteed at all times. As with animal husbandry and slaughtering, Land.Luft also takes a sustainable approach to the packaging concept: the materials used, such as the cool packs, are reusable and can be easily refrozen by the customer. The boxes are lined with hemp mats, which insulate the package well. These can later be used in the garden to sow herbs, for example, or disposed of in the organic waste garbage can in an environmentally friendly way.

With its pasture slaughtering and other pioneering concepts, Land.Luft is clearly one of the pioneers in animal welfare, sustainability and organic quality and will continue to be an important source of inspiration for our Trüffeljagd . The farm is also always keen to pass on knowledge and ensure the greatest possible transparency: interested visitors can take a tour of the farm and learn a lot about the butcher's trade and animal rearing. Thanks to the information boards set up all over the farm, the whole thing is completely self-guided. This is because the audio reports on all the stations, which are available via smartphone, can be easily accessed via the respective QR code.
